Facts About Swords

The medieval sword is probably the most coveted sword of all times. This sword is collected by many people and looks great alongside a full suit of armor. These collectible items are not just for the rich either, as many enthusiasts have them displayed in their modest homes. I wrote this article to talk more about the interesting facts people may or may not know about medieval swords.

Firstly we need to recognize that the swords of the middle ages were constantly changing and that different regions used different weapons of choice. These weapons were adapted to deal with the different armors that were created each year.

The size of the weapons varied greatly and you could have a sword that ranged from a size of thirty one inches all the way up to seventy two inches long. Length of the sword did not determine the weight as much as the thickness so the length was mostly dictated by the fighting style of the particular warrior.

Swords such as: broadswords, great swords, scimitars, long swords, falchion swords and even cutting swords are all medieval swords. These swords were used by different types of troops and in different time periods.

The scimitar was a curved blade with a sharp edge. This weapon was used by desert dwellers and tended to be a light weight model.

Broadswords had 30 inch long blades and double edges. This weapon was great for heavy close range combat and was used by the barbarians.

Great swords were extremely long and measured all the way up to 72 inches. The long handle of this weapon made it easy for warriors to hold it with both hands at the same time. These weapons were heavy and some had a weight of over 10 pounds.

The long sword was the second longest medieval weapon and could be as long as fifty inches. These weapons were fantastic for warriors that wanted a long range one handed fighting sword.

Cutting swords were light weight medieval swords that had very sharp edges. This weapon did not last long after the invention of thick metal armor.

Falchion swords were like scimitars but much thicker and heavier. These weapons were also used by men on horseback. They had one sharp edge and could make wicked cuts when wielded properly.

These swords are all medieval fighting swords and are great for display purposes. If you are thinking about getting a medieval weapon you now know that you have many options to choose from. Choosing a sword that fits your home décor should be very easy with all the options to choose from.
