And if the sperm was exposed to air?Air is not what kills sperm; the sperm cells need to be kept moist in order to survive. It can survive outside of the body as long as it is still moist; what kills the sperm cells is not air itself; rather, it is being dry.

What happens to sperm in a hot tub or pool?The possibility of ejaculate being present in a pool or hot tub is a concern for some women trying to avoid pregnancy. In this case, there is no reason for concern, as the heat of a hot tub and the chlorine in a pool kill the sperm on contact.

Is it okay to have sex in water, like the bathtub, pool, or shower.? YES. If actual intercourse with penetration takes place, the sperm have easy access to the vaginal canal and can fertilize an egg, just as if you were having sex in a bed.

What should I do to not become pregnant?

If you are trying to avoid getting pregnant, a good, simple rule of thumb is NO sexual activity which results in ejaculate contacting the woman’s body anywhere below the bellybutton or above the thighs. Remember, sperm can survive for days, both in and outside the vagina.

And, of course, using protection (condoms) and/or birth control is probably the best thing you can do to be able to enjoy your sex life to the fullest, and have peace of mind, too.
